There are many ways to find out whether a career in commercial law is right for you. None better than our very own CMS First Steps Programme. This week-long programme will give you first-hand experience of life at a modern global law firm.

The programme will fully immerse you in who we are and how we operate on a day-to-day level. You will meet with partners, shadow trainees and network with people from across the business. Along with getting an overview of our firm, you will take part in a series of case study seminars that will expand your legal knowledge. This will include us outlining how our firm generates revenue as well as showcasing some of the many exciting deals we have done.

During the course of the week you could gain any number of skills. Having said that, we will place special emphasis on helping you develop your commercial awareness and negotiation skills. We will do this through a series of interactive workshops that will allow you to put your new skills to the test.

Knowing how to network is important in any profession, and law is no different. So we will also conduct skills sessions on how to meet new people within the industry and build a strong professional network. This will include a special speed networking event in which you will get to meet Associates and Trainees from each of our practice areas.

The primary aim of our week-long programme is to help you determine whether commercial law is something you would like to pursue. It will be a challenging week, but all throughout it our graduate recruitment team will be on hand to offer you whatever support you need. We will also assign you a buddy who will give you one-to-one coaching and advice tailored to your needs.

The CMS First Steps Programme is held at our offices in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is designed for university students from both law and non-law backgrounds. To join, you should be a first year law student or a second year non-law student in England or Wales; a second year law student in Scotland; or a penultimate year student studying outside the UK.
